dropshift’s in-process bloom, is Phase 2 of a project that looks to collect sensory recapitulations of our past and explores the act of care-taking a dance. Each dancer has sourced stories, items, and sensed memories of their unique cultural space only to jettison the narrative for an image-driven experience that relies on a strong connection to interior self and to their fellow performers. Each mover works with a vibrant & whimsical fabric that drapes, collides, and has an organic quality- one that is inevitable and spontaneously beautiful. Moments experienced with the fabrics are spontaneous and wild, unpredictable. At times that movers use the fabrics in tandem to catapult a body and stop at moments to create organic sculptures that consume one body at a time.
bloom is an in progress section of a larger work, ROOMS, that premiered in April 2024. It is an experiment in connecting to the moment; allowing it to evolve/occur. It is a sensory experience for the mover, and one that we approach with a playful care for one another. While we use the fabrics to secretly manipulate the body we are also attending to outwardly creating spontaneous moments of color, beauty, and chaos. Video Experiment #1 highlights each unique fabric, making the textile the star, and uses perspective to create colorful, whimsical landscapes on the screen.
